Schwarz, who gambled up to a quarter of a million dollars each weekend at the peak of his addiction said the current state of the bookmakers’ integration with sport is a huge concern for society.

Minority investors in the Studio City casino project on Cotai will after all exercise an option to fund to the maximum level the second capital stage of the scheme. The minority partner, New Cotai LLC, had already committed to 40 percent of the US$800 million (6.40 billion patacas) first tranche for Studio City. A regulatory filing in October last year by Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd, the indirect 60 percent owner of Studio City, described the whole venture as a US$2.9 billion plan, of which US$2.04 billion is for construction.

With little fanfare, China is sending an official with a ‘tough cop’ reputation to be its top man in Macau, the world’s biggest gambling hub, as Beijing puts tackling corruption centre stage. Li Gang, a veteran of handling contentious issues in Hong Kong, is slated to this year take control of China’s liaison office in the former Portuguese colony which like Hong Kong is a special administrative region under China’s ‘one country, two systems’ principle. The office, China’s representative in Macau, has deepened its ties with casino and junket operators, who helped bring in over two-thirds of Macau’s $38 billion in revenues last year. The low-key but significant moves signal a deliberate attempt by China to be more directly involved in the oversight of Macau, which has drawn unwanted attention with reports of mainland officials laundering state funds and betting millions in the casinos’ high-roller VIP rooms.

Chamber of commerce organizations in Windsor and Niagara, who have been in support of the bill since it was first tabled on Parliament Hill, have now been joined by chamber organizations in Quebec and Atlantic Canada, who have more than 250 members. “When Senators return to their offices this morning, they will find evidence of growing national support for Bill C-290,” said Matt Marchand, president of the Windsor Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce. “We are gratified that other chambers are throwing their support behind passage of the bill.
