Friday proved to be an eventful day on the combative south Florida racing circuit. Gulfstream Park drew entries for Monday’s eight-race card, the first program of the track’s inaugural summer meeting, while at the same time Calder officials instituted a “restricted access policy” that prohibits horses stabled at its track from re-entering the grounds if they ship to race at Gulfstream. Despite the fact Calder refused to give its horsemen open access, Monday’s program at Gulfstream attracted 69 entries. The majority of the horses entered are currently stabled at Calder.

A northwest suburban casino has sued to try to stop Cook County from collecting a tax on slot and video poker machines that County Board President Toni Preckwinkle instituted last year to help balance the budget. It’s the latest challenge to one of the targeted taxes Preckwinkle has championed as a way to help close the county’s deficit while avoiding unpopular increases to sales and property taxes. Midwest Gaming, the company that owns Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, filed a lawsuit in county Circuit Court on Thursday alleging that the tax is illegal under the state Riverboat Gambling Act.

Gaming revenues produced by casinos in North Las Vegas, along the Boulder Strip, in Henderson and throughout unincorporated Clark County are down a collective 2.6 percent through April… It long has been predicted that neighborhood casinos would be the last to recover as the Southern Nevada economy slowly ascends after bottoming out in 2010. Amid all the doom and gloom, however, two analysts in the past week said they sense a rebound could take hold in the locals gaming market in the second half of the year. That’s good news for Boyd Gaming Corp., Station Casinos and other players in the neighborhood casino space.

Police have shut down all commercial card clubs in Bangalore on instructions from home minister K J George. Justifying the action against more than 1,000 card clubs, police claim most clubs conducted high-stakes rummy games leading to drunken brawls and fatal street fights. Many clubs are situated in residential areas, they say, and residents have lodged complaints. Asked how they could shut down registered clubs with licence, police point out that all recreational clubs are granted license to operate card tables while providing sport-and-leisure facilities. A badminton court, a table tennis hall and a reading room are a must. But 90% of the licensed clubs operate only card tables; some have become gambling dens.

The biggest casino in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh has reinstated hundreds of workers including croupiers, drivers and cleaners, many of whom were sacked after walking out over wages and conditions, a union leader said. More than 400 workers at the NagaWorld hotel and casino were sacked or suspended from their jobs last week after striking to demand a pay hike from US$80 to US$150 a month and improved working conditions. Sok Narith, vice president of the Cambodian Tourism and Service Workers Federation, said all workers had returned to work after a court injunction was issued on Tuesday ordering workers to end their strike and the company to reinstate them.

Sands China Ltd. hasn’t seen any decline in revenue from high-stake gamblers as China’s economic growth slows. The company’s business is expected to be “very strong” going forward and the second half is traditionally better than the first, Sands China Chief Executive Officer Edward Tracy said. Mainland China holidays in the latter half of the year will boost growth, he said. “We don’t see anything on the horizon that’s troubling,” Tracy said yesterday in an interview with Bloomberg Television in Hong Kong.
