Macau’s number of visitor arrivals rose 11 percent year on year to 2.74 million. Overnight visitors (1.4 million) and same-day visitors (1.3 million) increased 17.7 percent and 4.4 percent. . Overnight visitors stayed an average of 2.1 days. Mainland visitors increased 7.1 percent year on year to 1.76 million in April. Guangdong residents accounted for 41 percent of all mainland visitors.

Employees across a variety of sectors in Macau kicked off the year by earning more than in the first quarter of last year, the hotel sector employed the largest number of full-time personnel (54,439) in the city, having also hired more workers than any other sector examined during the period, up 9.7 per cent year-on-year.
The total number of guest check ins at Macau hotels and guesthouses reached nearly 1.08 million in April this year, an expansion of 17.3 percent on the prior-year period. The average occupancy rate of Macau hotels and guesthouses also increased 6.4 percentage points year-on-year to 86.1 percent in April.
Property President of Altira Macau and Mocha Clubs, Andy Choy, reveals a pragmatic approach to the future evolution of the ’boutique’ hotel and the more mass market slot club. Under the decree, eligible investors wishing to invest and operate in services, tourism and entertainment businesses with casinos must invest a minimum capital of US$2 billion and submit plans to manage the negative impacts of casino operations.
Japan’s government plans to strictly screen casino operators through licensing and those who win a permit will be required to renew them periodically. Also, to prevent members of yakuza organizations and other antisocial forces from getting involved in the casino business, the draft stipulates that thorough probes will be carried out, focusing on such factors as business relationships of the operators.
Melco International Development’s (200.HK) Lawrence Ho shed some light on the Macau gaming giant’s split from James Packer’s Crown Resorts (CWN.AU) in an interesting interview piece with the Financial Times… “James Packer and myself are still great friends,” he said. “But my view and his view on China and the world was different at that time.
