Shares in Macau casino operators were among the stocks listed in Hong Kong that were buffeted by volatility in trading yesterday as the police there used force to suppress protests against the central government’s limits on democracy in the city.
A Japanese lawmaker backing a bill to legalize casinos said he expects it to win lower-house approval next month and that the gambling resorts would be in major cities and charge locals an entry fee. “We want to finish up in the lower house in the first half of October and send it on to the upper house,” Koichi Hagiuda, secretary-general of a lawmaker’s group promoting the casino bill and an aide to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, said.

Gambling industry officials say U.S. casinos had a $240 billion economic impact and employed 1.7 million people in 2013. The American Gaming Association is expected to announce the results of its economic study Tuesday morning at a news conference.
