The average occupancy rate of hotels and guesthouses in Macau was 73.9 percent last month, 10.6 percentage points less than a year earlier… Macau had 102 hotels and guesthouses containing about 30,000 guest rooms at the end of last month.
Macau will also face the problems of ageing and a diminishing labor force a decade ahead. The city’s population will hit around 750,000 in 2025 from the current 640,700, the Policy Research Office (GEP) predicts in its latest population policy report, which also indicates that the imbalance in labor force demand and supply will continue to grow.
The Macau government remains committed to its proposal for a full smoking ban inside casinos, the office of the Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture, Alexis Tam Chong Weng, said. The clarification came after Steve Wynn hinted that Mr. Tam had made a U-turn on the proposal. “The government’s stance on this matter is clear, as stated in the bill that has passed first reading by the Legislative Assembly.”
Steve Wynn finally feels confident enough to set an opening date for his second casino in Macau. Wynn Palace resort will open March 25 next year. “We’re pretty sanguine at the moment, although anything is subject to change,” the 73-year-old Wynn said. “The government happily gave us 100 percent of our last and final request for construction labor.”
Lottery sales in Mainland China rose by 5.2 percent to RMB187.6 billion ($30.7 billion) in the first six months of the year… welfare lottery sales increased by 4.4 percent to RMB102.8 billion, while sports lottery sales increased 6.2 percent to RMB84.83 billion.
Tiger Resort, Leisure and Entertainment Inc – a firm controlled by Japanese gaming entrepreneur Kazuo Okada – has got a new local partner for its US$2-billion Manila Bay Resorts project… “Through this collaboration with Mr. Cojuangco, Tiger Resort has acquired a strong local partner that will add value to the development by lending his years of experience and expertise in the tourism and arts industries,” Tiger Resort said.
Japanese tycoon Kazuo Okada increased its budget for the first phase of a Philippine casino by a third to $2 billion, in return for obtaining a government extension on the delayed project in the capital city Manila. The total investment on the entire complex may reach about $4 billion. The initial phase, scheduled to open December 2016, will have two hotels with 1,000 rooms, 500 gaming tables.
Estonian-owned listed casino operator Olympic Entertainment Group (OEG), has acquired casinos in Latvia and Italy… acquired the business activity of two VLT slot casinos from the Italian VLT casino operator… will own 14 VLT slot casinos in Italy… The group signed the agreement to acquire 100% shareholding in Latvian casino operator SIA Garkalns, which is also the 100% owner of the subsidiary SIA Post-Nevada. On the completion of the transaction OEG will own 57 casinos in Latvia.
Malta’s online gambling regulator has suspended more operating licenses in the wake of last week’s enforcement action by Italian police against Malta-licensed Betuniq. On Tuesday, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) announced it had suspended the operating licenses of Fenplay Ltd, whose director Vincenzo Giuliano was among the 28 Italian individuals detained by Italian police during last week’s sweep of betting operations linked to the ‘Ndrangheta crime family. The MGA also issued similar suspension notices for licensees Soft Bet Ltd, Soft Casino Ltd and Alibaba Casino Ltd.
