Luxury-watch retailer Halewinner will almost double its store count in the Chinese gambling hub of Macau, where casinos want time to be irrelevant, dealing another blow to Hong Kong’s staggering retail market. Halewinner Watches Group will open at least nine more shops in Macau while closing two in Hong Kong. Most of the new stores will be in the Cotai Strip, where Sands China Ltd. will open its Parisian resort this year and Wynn Macau Ltd. will debut the Wynn Palace.
Studio City, a new Macau casino resort 60-percent owned by Melco Crown Entertainment, accounts for approximately 6 percent of mass-market tables in Macau but only around 4 percent of the city’s casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) from table games, said a note from brokerage Sanford C. Bernstein Ltd. They stated the lack of VIP gaming was an important factor. “The casino has mass operation with no VIP and very limited high-end premium mass play. Consequently, it takes a longer time to ramp and drive profitability,” they added.
The average occupancy rate of Macau’s 106 hotels and guesthouses fell by 0.9 percentage points to 76.5 percent in March. The number of guestrooms rose by 4,000, or 13.6 percent, to 32,000 at the end of last month from the same period of last year. Guestrooms of 5-star hotels (20,000) and 4-star hotels (8,000) rose by 11.7 percent and 28.4 percent respectively.
Casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) in the Philippines continues to grow, being up 7 percent year-on-year in the three months to March 31. “March GGR (-1 percent year-on-year; -6 percent quarter-on-quarter) held up well, despite the Easter lull hampering year-on-year comparisons,” said analyst Marcus Liu… we expect April GGR to be up [about] 40 percent year-on-year.”
The Australian federal government has released its response to the O’Farrell Review of illegal offshore wagering, ruling out any chance of liberalizing online in-play betting… Out of all the recommendations set out by the review, the government has accepted 18 of the 19 recommendations made, all except for one that recommended the relaxation of online-in-play prohibition in the IGA.

The Brazilian Institute for Legal Gaming – the IJL – which I have the honor of chairing is a non-governmental organization that advocates the legalization of gambling in this country.
