Backed by the New Macau Gaming Workers’ Rights Union, seven former dealers who claim to have been “unreasonably” dismissed, complained to the Labour Affairs Bureau (DSAL) yesterday. The seven ex-croupiers wore facemasks and sun glasses. High-profile labour activist Cloee Chao Sao Fong, who heads the union, told reporters outside the bureau that her group had received complaints from over 20 ex-dealers about a local casino, claiming they had been forced to resign or were “unreasonably” fired.

The number of visitors on package tours totaled 559,000 in February 2017, according to information from the Statistics and Census Service published yesterday, down by 1.5 percent year-on-year and up by 4.7 percent month-to-month. China (414,000) and Taiwan (36,000) dropped by 5.4 percent and 9.3 percent, while those from South Korea (49,000) surged by 54.4 percent.
Japanese brokerage Nomura is lifting its year-on-year growth estimates for 2017 Macau casino gross gaming revenue (GGR) by half – a hefty four percentage points – to 12 percent, from 8 percent previously… The improvement in macroeconomic outlook it said – citing Bloomberg data and its own research – included a steep rise in China property prices.
Macau casino investor Success Universe Group Ltd posted a net loss of nearly HKD31.0 million (US$4.0 million) for full 2016, a sharp increase of 364.4 percent… revenue of approximately HKD573.1 million, down 43.3 percent. Success Universe is a joint venture partner – alongside a unit of gaming operator SJM Holdings Ltd – in casino hotel Ponte 16, located on the Macau peninsula.
Wynn Macau posted a 40 percent year-on-year decline in 2016 net profit, but posted higher revenue, driven by VIP gaming at its new Wynn Palace Resort… net profit of HK$1.4 billion (US$180.2 million)… operating revenues increased by 16 percent from to HK$22.1 billion in 2016… a 14.9 percent increase in casino revenues to HK$20.6 billion in 2016… VIP table games turnover increased by 6.3 percent, while mass market gross table games win increased by 15 percent.
The Philippines will not issue any more casino licenses in the capital for five years; the industry regulator is heeding oversupply concerns among existing investors. “We are looking at protecting those who have taken a risk earlier, who have invested a lot of money,” said Domingo. She revealed that Pagcor recently denied a U.S. company’s bid for a gaming license in Metropolitan Manila. “We don’t want too [much] proliferation of casinos,” she said.
Okada Manila is set to open a number of its hotel rooms, restaurants and retail shops today… commenced its casino operations on December 30, after securing a provisional casino license… The $2.4 billion casino resort, developed by a subsidiary of Universal Entertainment.
Mainland China’s total official lottery sales for February were RMB28.15 billion (US$4.08 billion), up 25.4 percent… Welfare lottery sales increased by 23.9 percent, reaching RMB15.30 billion, while sports lottery sales went up 27.1 percent to RMB12.86 billion. Sales were up – in year-on-year terms – in 30 of the 31 regional level jurisdictions of mainland China where sales of lottery tickets are allowed.
Agents from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation visited an office belonging to the operator of a casino on the remote U.S. island of Saipan that has attracted attention for its huge revenues, according to a local legislator and residents… They stayed for several hours, with local police blocking access to the building. “There definitely was some kind of investigation or raid being done,” said Ed Propst, a member of the territorial legislature. “It appears to be a joint effort between local and federal authorities.”
South Australia’s Minister for Consumer and Business Services John Rau said he would call for more decisive action to be taken to prevent harm from online gambling, saying current proposals are “cosmetic and inadequate.”… the South Australian Government said it will call on ministers to disrupt or eliminate offshore gambling operators; prohibit any advertising before during and after sports events; prohibit inducements to participate in online gambling and introduce mandatory ID verification prior to being allowed to open an account.
